General Research Notes
1. Several variant spellings of the surname "Jary" commonly appear in censuses, parish registers, and tombstones. Here are some of them:
- Jary
- Jairy
- Jairey
- Jeary
- Jarey
- Jory
For the sake of continuity, we will use the "Jary" form, unless directly quoting a source. And I must admit that sometimes, in a misguided attempt to squeeze every bit of time into a research day at the Norfolk Record Office as possible, I have used "Jary" when making notes, regardless of the spelling in the source. This inexcusable sloppiness was strictly of my own doing. The engineer side of this partnership wouldn't do that.
2. When using the term "born," we generally mean place of baptism, unless noted. We realise that just because someone was baptised in a parish, that doesn't necessarily mean they were born there. However, in the absence of birth records prior to 1837, we're going by the next best thing.
3. Abbreviations, acronyms, and terms regularly used in this site:
- NRO = Norfolk Record Office, Norwich, England.
- GRO = General Register Office, UK.
- PR = Parish Register
- AT = Archdeacon's Transcript
