The children of Thomas and Ann (Stirges) Newbegin
A couple of months ago, in a look at the 1841 Blakeney Census, I wondered about the connection(s) between the households of Henry Degauan and Thomas Newbegin:
| Page | Place | Name | Sex | Age | Profession | Born in Norfolk? | Head of Household | Comments |
| 21 | High St | Henry Degauan (sp?) | M | 27 | Fisherman | Y | (Self) | (Surname hard to read; unsure of spelling.) |
| Maria | F | 22 | Y | Henry Degauan | ||||
| Horatia | M | 3 | Y | Henry Degauan | ||||
| Alford | M | 1 | Y | Henry Degauan | ||||
| Nevison Newbegin | M | 17 | Shoe App | Y | Henry Degauan | See below | ||
| 22 | High St | Thos Newbegin | M | 56 | Baker | Y | (Self) | See below |
| Ann | F | 52 | Y | Thos Newbegin | Formerly Stirges | |||
| Horatia | M | 30 | Tailor | Y | Thos Newbegin | See below | ||
| Maria Cooper | F | 10 | Y | Thos Newbegin | End of family mark (/) after Horatia's name. |
| Page | Name | Age | Comments |
| 21 | Nevison Newbegin | 17 | There is an end of dwelling mark (//) on the line with Alford Degauan's name, but no digit in "Inhabited" column next to Nevison's name to indicate a new dwelling, so it's a bit unclear whether Nevison was in the Degauan household or on his own. Nevison's name is on the last line on page 21. Page 22 begins with Thos Newbegin's household. Nevison witnessed Horatio Newbegin's marriage to Catherine Peeps. |
| 22 | Thos Newbegin | 56 | The Degauan(?) & Newbigin households were adjacent to each other. Note the similarities in names. Were Nevison & Maria the daughter & son of Thos & Ann Newbegin? |
| Ann Newbegin | 52 | Formerly Stirges[10] | |
| Horatia Newbegin | 30 | Married Catherine Jary Peeps, daughter of Lane & Ann Jary (enum. p. 3) in 1843. Name spelled "Horatio" in marriage registry. |
We've since received more microfilms from the NRO. I haven't finished going through all the registers, but so far I've found baptism records for ten children of Thomas & Ann:
Daughter: Margaret Stirges NEWBEGIN
Born: 20 Feb 1811 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [11]
Baptised: 22 Feb 1811 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [11]
Daughter: Maria NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 11 Feb 1813 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [1o, 11]
Son: Thomas NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 16 Oct 1814 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Son: Francis NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 09 May 1816 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Daughter: Maria NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 09 Aug 1817 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Daughter: Hannah Matilda NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 11 Apr 1819 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Son: Horatio NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 13 Nov 1820 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Spouse: Catherine JARY Peeps (1811 - ) [12]
Son: Nevison Stirgess NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 26 Apr 1822 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Son: Zachariah NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 24 Dec 1823 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Died: aft Mar 1851 [13]
Spouse: Maryann (Unknown) (abt 1826 - ) [13]
Daughter: Roda Matilda NEWBEGIN
Baptised: 11 Oct 1825 at Cley-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, England [10]
Having found these baptism records, I think it's likely that Maria, wife of Henry Degauan, was the Maria baptised in 1817, daughter of Thomas & Ann Newbegin, and that Nevison Newbegin was her brother. I'll keep looking for Maria & Henry's marriage record (and I'm hoping the surname will be easier to read.)

I have researched at length and depth Henry Digman - my great great grandfather - and the Newbegins etc., etc.,
I look forward to discussing/assisting. My ancestors include the Stirges family of Cley
Regards
Nik
Maria was baptised 9 August 1817 in Cley - daughter of Thomas Newbegin and Ann Stirges who were married 19 June 1810 in Cley. Data obtained from microfiilm/fiche at NRO

Hi Nik,
Thanks for your comments. I don't think I'd have ever figured out that Henry's surname was Digman, but looking back at the image now, I can just make it out. Thank you!
Ann Stirges witnessed the will of John Sadler in 1812. Do you know what the relationship was? The other witnesses were John Jary "Officer of Customs" and Rob[er]t Farthing. (The will is available online at http://www.norfolksources.norfolk.gov.uk … Search the Probate records for Sadler; his probate was in 1834.
Nik,
I've just found the record of the marriage of Thomas Newbegin & Hannah Cooper in Stiffkey on 20 Jan 1782. (Image 13/23 online, Stiffkey Marriages 1754-1812, NRO PD 492/5)
The Thomas Newbegin who married Ann Stirges was, according to the 1851 census, born in Stiffkey around 1782. So I'm thinking the elder Thomas and Hannah Cooper were his parents?
