Dear Carol,

Thank you so much for the William Lane info you sent me. I apologise for the delay in replying, but our computer went on the blink and it has taken ages to get it sorted.

It is not easy to work out which is the William Lane I am after - the man I seek was a clockmaker - though he may in fact have had a different trade. I suspect it is the one who died in 1771. The clock I have is very old, c. 1565, but was "modernised" by a William Lane, Clay, in about 1740/60, to judge by certain technical features. There are very complete books which list some 100,000 clockmakers in the UK, but my man isn't there ! Any more information you find in future would be most welcome.

Very many thanks,

yours,
Mark Forrester

Hi Mark,

First, I apologise for taking so long to get back to you. I've been on holiday, but when I got back, I started looking through the Cley registers for you. Here are all the entries for the Lane surname that I could find. I may have missed some, of course, as some pages are very faint and hard to read.

-----------------------------

Cley next the Sea General Register 1686-1744 NRO MF694/19 PD270

1723
Andrew Lane & Ann ? (??ffyn) possibly? were married July 6

1729
John Lane (or Lake?) & Margret (blank space) were married Oct 17; note there was a 1743 marriage of Thomas Lake in which the surname was very clearly written as Lake. John's surname may well have been Lake rather than Lane.

1729
Lewis the Son of Rich[ar]d & Mary Lane bapt[ise]d March 18

1738
William Son of Will[iam] & Mary Lane May 11th (date not clearest, but think it's two 1's. Next date 28th May) Surname is definitely Lane

1741
Thomas Son of William & Mary Lane was bapt[ised] Jun[e] 30th

1743
Thomas Son of W[illia]m and Mary Lane was bap[tised] Feb[rua]ry 9th (Presumably the Thomas baptised in 1741 died, but I found no burial record for him in Cley. I may have missed it.)

1743
Thomas Son of Will[ia]m & Mary Lane May 29th (burial)

---------------------------------

Cley next the Sea General Register 1744-1779 NRO MF694/20 PD270

1747
Lydia Daug[hte]r of W[illia]m & Mary Lane bap[tised] May 14th

1751
Robert son of W[illia]m & Mary Lane (baptised) June 9th

1753
Mary Daug[hte]r of W[illia]m & Mary Lane bur[ie]d Aug[ust] 22d
Rob[er]t son of W[illia]m & Mary Lane bur[ie]d Nov[embe]r 7th

1755
Susan (written as Sufan) Daug[hter] of W[illia]m & Phebe Lane bap: Mar: 25th (Did Mary die, or was this their son, William, bapt in 1738? If so, he married very young; would have been around 17 yrs at this baptism)

1768
May 8th: Thomas son of William & Mary Lane (burial)

1771
Feb[ruar]y 10: William Lane (burial) (no age given)

1776
Alice Daug[hte]r William & Alice Lane Nov[embe]r 9th (baptised)

-------------------------------

Cley NTS Parish Registers Baptisms & Burials 1779-1814 NRO MF694/21 PD270/5

Page 2 1781 Burials
Line 7 Lane - William Lane March 21st (age) 44

Page 10 1790 Burials
Line 3 Lane - Mary Lane Widow Feb: 21 (no age given.)

I hope this helps. I'll add the surname "Lane" to the list of "to be on the lookout for" as I'm going through more of the registers.

Kind regards,
Carol

I am trying to track down the dates of William Lane of Clay, who appears to be the father noted in the 1743 deaths list. I believe he was a clockmaker ( I have a clock signed William Lane Clay ) and am trying to date it. Were there some different generations with the same name, perhaps , to confuse things ?

Many Thanks,
